Paula’s Pro-Tips For Standing Out From The Crowd

Want to work at Steamroller Animation? Paula offers up the following advice to help you stand out from the sea of applicants that we get:

Usually, candidates are looking for how they can stand out in such a competitive market.

The advice I usually give is:

  • Put your best work first in your demo reel and portfolio vs. chronological. And, as your body of work grows, don't be afraid to cut some shots out if the reel is reaching a few minutes long. Hiring managers have a lot on their plates and you usually have the first few seconds to make an impression.

  • Include a shot breakdown in the description of your demo reel or somewhere easy to find.

  • The internet is a big place, and recruiters source from a variety of sites. Make yourself discoverable.

    • Create a LinkedIn page and make sure your demo reel/website is visible.

    • Add yourself to projects you've worked on in IMDb, even if you were not credited because you can list yourself as "uncredited".

    • Network as much as you can. Don't be afraid to reach out and connect with artists that you admire. It always helps to have a referral.
